I get asked a lot how I got into the business of waxing.  Honestly, I never pictured myself waxing so much.  I dont really like inflicting pain on anyone. I pictured myself doing facials in a spa.  When I was in my aesthetics program and we learned waxing, I fell in love with it and started waxing anyone I could get to come over.  I waxed people on my kitchen table and living room couch!  My friends and I would wax each other.  Soon after I was done with school I got my first job at European Wax Center.  I was terrified to have to do a Brazilian wax, or watch one being done! I pushed through that and it was no big deal!  Over time it became very easy.  I have seen so many vaginas that its like looking at any other body part.  A foot or an arm!  I love my clients and the conversations we have.  Im usually only with my clients for 15 minutes once or twice a month so its perfect for catching up.  I enjoy doing what I do. I like making someone feel pretty or feel better about themselves.  I like talking to all different kinds of people and the interesting conversations that we have.  There are so many reasons I love this job.

Wear SPF!!!

Did you know that when it comes to aging, sun exposure is the #1 biggest factor?  It affects our skin more than drinking, or smoking or lack of sleep.  Most of the damage to your skin was done before the age of 18.  Here is a scary photo of a lady in a woods lamp.

These lamps are designed to show us the sun damage on our skin.  You may not see all that damage, but it is there lurking..waiting to come out as age spots as you get older.  We had one of these lamps at the aesthetics school I went to and when I saw my face it looked just like this ladies face on the right.  Scary!!  Ive also already had skin cancer removed from my left temple.

You should wear SPF every single day.  I use a moisturizer with SPF 15.  My foundation has SPF 25.  That is for normal days.  If Im going to be outside hiking or at a game or anything else, I lather on SPF 30.  Also, be sure you get the SPF in your ears!  Ears are a part that usually get neglected when putting on sunscreen so dont forget your ears!

Everything you need to know about getting a Brazilian Wax!

I know for many the thought of a Brazilian Wax sounds like pure torture.  And it can be if you go to the wrong person or don't prepare correctly.  It is true that it hurts pretty bad the first time.  You are having all of your hairs ripped out at the root!  I can tell you from experience that it will never be as bad as that first time again.  And most of the time my clients tell me that it was not as bad as they were expecting it to be.  A lot of that has to do with fear and not knowing what to expect.  Once you have been through the process, it gets so much easier with less and less pain each time!  Plus, when you see how long it takes for your hair to grow back and how thin and sparse it is when it grows back, you will be sold on it!  After that first wax, if you keep up on it and get yourself waxed every 4-6 weeks, it's not nearly as painful and actually becomes something that is no big deal.  If you go to someone good, it shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes.  That isn't that long to have weeks of being smooth!

The best way to prep for a Brazilian is to make sure your hair is the right length!  Generally speaking it should not be shorter than 1/4 inch and no longer than 1/2 inch!  It can be a lot more painful if you come with really long hair.  Its harder to get the wax through all the hair down to the skin.  Also, if your hair is too long, a lot of the hairs break off at the root instead of coming out at the root.  Breaking off the hair will get you the same result as shaving...instant grow back!

Its a great idea to take some Tylenol or Ibuprophen about 30 minutes before your waxing appointment to help with the pain.  Don't drink alcohol or caffeine!  That actually can make your skin more sensitive and make it more painful.  The best time to come in is a week after your period.  The closer your are to your monthly cycle, the more it will hurt.  Also, your skin is more sensitive when you are pregnant.

When you come to my studio for a wax, I will ask you to get undressed from the waist down and you will have a towel you can drape over yourself for modesty.  But really I am going to be seeing it all anyways so this is more for your comfort than anything.  Your waxer will also appreciate it if you are freshly showered.  If that isn't an option, then go into the bathroom before your wax and take advantage of the flushable wipes in there!

When you are on the table, you will be laying face up with your heels together in a butterfly position.  I will be able to wax the entire front area in this position.  After a thorough cleanse of the area, its time to get down to business.  A really good waxer is very quick about it and does not ever double dip a stick!  A fresh stick should be used every time and go straight into the trash after it has touched the clients skin.  Using hard, or stripless wax is great because I can lay down several strips at a time and it makes it go FAST!  Plus, I talk you through it so you always know what Im doing.  The last part is the butt strip and this is usually what people are the most afraid of but there is no need because its the least painful part of the whole process!  You don't have to get into any weird positions either, I just ask that you bring your knees to your chest and Im able to get the whole area in usually 2 small strips!

Once all the waxing is done, I put on some PFB Vanish.  It has salicylic acid, willow bark and glycolic acid.  These ingredients moisturize and exfoliate your skin.  It will soothe your skin and with regular use, it really helps you avoid ingrown hairs, bumps and break outs!  Ingrown hairs are a normal part of waxing if you don't take good care of your skin.  If you continue to wax, you will continue to thin out your hair and as they get thinner, they have a harder and harder time pushing up through the skin.  The  best way to avoid ingrown hairs is to exfoliate with exfoliating gloves daily in the shower. If you do that and use PFB Vanish, you will not have ingrown hairs!!  Then you will be able to enjoy your smooth soft skin for 3-4 weeks before you are ready to go back!!  And yes, you will want to go back.  Getting waxed is addicting!!

So what happens after the wax?  Well, you wont want to do anything that heats up your skin for 24 hrs.  No hot tubs, saunas, working out.  You also need to refrain from sex for 24 hrs.  Your pores need a chance to close back up.  Doing these things can easily spread infection, can cause bumps or ingrown hairs.  Give yourself a good day after the wax to let your skin rest.
